Maintenance services

The main customer of VR Track's maintenance services is The Finnish Rail Administration, the owner of Finland’s railway network. Other customers requiring maintenance services include industrial plants, municipalities and harbours.

The task of VR Track’s Maintenance Services Unit is to ensure safe rail operations by maintaining the structures and equipment to the standards specified by the customer.
Our maintenance services cover inspection, preventive maintenance and repairs. Frequency of inspections, permitted tolerances, and maintenance requirements are determined by the relevant instructions and specifications.

To a great extent, the Construction Unit and the Maintenance Services Unit can draw on common equipment and personnel resources. This enables us to provide customers with cost-effective equipment and solutions tailored to their specific needs.
The Maintenance Services Unit receives continuous information about the state of the tracks from railway personnel. The switches are also subjected to 1-3 checks each year, while the regular inspection of track equipment and signalling is carried out in accordance with predetermined programmes. The purpose of all this is to prevent malfunctions.

The Finnish Rail Administration and The Finnish Rail Agency monitor the condition of the State's rail network and private sidings and the quality of the contractors’ work.
The railway network is regularly checked using inspection cars equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Increasing speeds and more frequent train services mean that maintenance windows can be very short. For this reason, most of the work has to be carried out at night and during weekends. This is essential to minimize traffic disruption.
